Air and Time
YEMCA of the Youngeun Museum of Art
Inhee Yang’s Air and Time begins, as always, with the body and its senses. The pigment that seeps into paper, the tremble left by a coarse brush, the fleeting traces of wind and shadow—these are not merely shapes, but impressions formed through the breath shared between body and nature. The artist captures sensations at the crossroads of intention and accident, inscribing them onto the surface in real time.
In this exhibition, new works such as Inside of one’s skin, Face—Horizontal and Vertical, The tree that sleeps lying down, and The smell of the seven countries explore the layered dimensions of air and time. The images overlap, blur, and reemerge, guiding viewers through landscapes of unfamiliar sensation embedded within the everyday. More than representation, these works seek to reveal the invisible—yet undeniably present—gaps in perception.
“I never express what I have not experienced,” Inhee Yang asserts. Her practice is not rooted in explanation or narrative, but in the language of embodied sensation and memory. Following the traces across the surface, the viewer encounters a tactile subtlety—like a feather brushing against skin.
What once passed unnoticed—light and air, drifting shadows and the tremble of wind—comes to rest at the center of perception. In facing these works, the viewer not only discovers their own sense of air and time, but also realizes how such discoveries might extend into the moments of lived experience. This exhibition invites us to reconsider how we inhabit the world, expanding into a space of reflection where sense and memory coalesce.
“We always live in a semi-transparent atmosphere. The sound of wind brushing through the leaves, the faint edges of shadows cast on the ground—in between, I try to see what passes by and hear what quietly trembles.”
